Howard Pierce was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1912. He attended the University of Illinois and the Chicago Art Institute. When Pierce relocated to Claremont, California he furthered his art education at Pomona College.

Later, he was approached by important California ceramist, William Manker, and was offered employment at his studio which lasted three years before venturing out on his own in a studio in 1941 in La Verne, California then later set up a business in Claremont in 1945.

According to Jack Chipman, “Pierce was one of the most original of the Southern California ceramists working commercially creating his stylized sculptures of birds, animals, and human subjects.”

In 1968, he moved to Joshua Tree, California for semi-retirement.  Today, you can see many of his large than life size outdoor sculptures he created for various community organizations.

Howard Pierce died in 1994.

This coyote figurine is pictured in the Collector’s Encyclopedia of California Pottery Second Edition by Jack Chipman on page 216.

It is marked twice; hand signed by Pierce and marked with his stamp mark.
