Carlos Villanueva studied under masters Jorge Wilmot, Jose Bernabe and Ken Edwards. He also worked with Ken Edwards as administrator in his workshop in Tonala, Mexico. By 1978 he was becoming well known around Mexico for his techniques and he won the National Ceramic Prize of Mexico that year for being the best artisan.
