Charles and Alice Smith whose pottery operation was in existence in California (possibly Los Angeles) during the 1940’s and early 1950’s were known for their coarse, matte finishes with incised decorations. They were free-spirited artists and were somewhat ahead of their time with unconventional ware. Charles and Alice Smith were very imaginative and “modern minded” which shows in their designs. Their pieces have been very difficult to find. REF: Jack Chipman, Author, California Pottery Identification and Value Guide.
