Designer Princess Mimi di Niscemi was born in 1931 in Palermo, Italy to an aristocratic family. She married Prince Alexander Romanov in 1971 after she had already established her jewelry business in the United States.
Early in her career di Niscemi attended the Philadelphia School of Industrial Arts to learn the art of silversmithing and jewelry making. She worked for a jewelry company who manufactured for Schiaparelli in the United States before aligning with Arnold Scaasi to produce the Jewels by Scaasi collection.
Di Niscemi also worked with Robert DeMario in 1959 and Brania in the early 1960s. She began her own company in New York in the early 1960s (some sources say 1960, others note 1962) and began marking her jewelry and accessories Mimi di N. In addition to her jewelry lines, she is known for designing a plethora of fashionable belt buckles.
